Maratona del Mugello

Italy's oldest marathon begins in Piazza Dante in Borgo San Lorenzo, a town in Tuscany's Mugello region, close to Florence. This late-September road race offers two distances: the full 42.195 km marathon and the 21.0975 km Mezza Mugello Marathon. The route crosses the Mugello valley, winding past vineyards, olive groves, and historic Tuscan villages, with Scarperia situated along the marathon path. The race originated from a 1970s initiative by Borgo San Lorenzo runners to establish Italy's first marathon, with its inaugural run taking place at night. It also serves as a memorial for Roberto Gherardi, Franco Sargenti, and Mario Boretti, individuals connected to its founding.
