About this race

La Speata is a 12-kilometer uphill road race from Subiaco to Monte Livata, located about 70 kilometers east of Rome. It takes place in summer within the Monti Simbruini Regional Park. The climb is the entire focus; there is no flat recovery, with gradients varying from approximately 11% to 7%. The Gruppo Marciatori Simbruini has organized this event since 1974, typically attracting hundreds of runners ready for a demanding mountain road effort, distinct from a typical town race. The name originates from the local dialect, signifying a tough run on foot, with the added nuance that the feet endure the most strain. This aligns with the route, which ascends from Subiaco towards Monte Livata, requiring consistent strength, pacing, and patience. The race embodies a local blend of tradition, folklore, and hard-won respect. Marco Mancini, involved with the organizing staff since 1996, characterized its reputation with the statement: “If you know it, you avoid it.”
