Saarland Pig is a challenging road-bike ride that follows Germany’s Saarland region’s borders as closely as possible. It takes place on the last weekend of August. The event originated from a rider's concept for a more demanding end-of-season challenge, following longer RTF rides, a marathon, and a multi-day tour. The standard Original von Borg route covers approximately 302 km, with a reported riding time of 14 hours and 16 minutes, making it a substantial day on the bike rather than a brief local competition. The route was specifically designed because the official Saarland Cycle Route did not stay close enough to the border and was unsuitable for road bikes. Early departures are characteristic of the event; the inaugural ride began just after 5 AM, under dark, foggy, yet mild conditions. Freudenburg emerged as a logical stopping point after a test ride identified a bakery there. The first complete ride also included an extended break at a gas station in Blieskastel, around the 230 km mark. Participants discuss practical considerations such as provisions, Sunday business hours, late-night stores, and the hilly terrain near Merzig and Mettlach.
