Persistence Backyard Ultra 2026

Persistence Backyard Ultra challenges runners with a 6.7056-kilometre loop, completed once every hour, on the hour, near London, Ontario. This annual event takes place on the August long weekend and is an official affiliate of Big Dog's Backyard Ultra. London is located approximately two hours from Detroit and Toronto, and about 2.5 hours from Buffalo. The race format is straightforward and demanding: complete the loop within the hour, use the remaining time to rest, and then start the next loop until only one runner remains. The participants can range from those completing just one loop to regional ultrarunners seeking to cover significant distances. Contenders also vie for a spot on Canada's World Team Championship squad, as the race offers Silver Ticket status. A portion of the registration fees benefits the Children's Health Foundation. The victor is awarded the Laz Jacket, named after Lazarus Lake, the creator of the backyard ultra format. Amanda Nelson established the race's early history with consecutive Last One Standing victories, including a 32-hour, 214-kilometre performance against 56 other runners. Justin Wright later set the event record at 47 loops.
