Salute to Service 5K & 1 Miler

The Salute to Service 5K & 1 Miler begins on West Washington Street in downtown Suffolk, Virginia. It takes place in November to honor U.S. military service members. Tidewater Striders and RunSomeMo organize the event, offering a 5K run, a 5K race walk, and a kid's mile on the same morning. The course is flat and fast through downtown Suffolk, featuring a water stop near the 5K's halfway mark. The race provides standard overall and age-group awards, distinct walker awards, and 1-mile age-group awards for children and adults. Its unique competition is for military branch teams, awarding prizes for the largest team and the fastest team, calculated from each branch's top male and female participants. All finishers receive medals, registered runners get shirts, and the post-race gathering includes a live band, beer, pizza, snacks, and cold drinks.
