The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Sprint for Seniors Bed Race is a short, team-based charity race held at Miami-Dade College’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. It takes place each November around Homeless Awareness Day, featuring five-person teams pushing decorated beds on wheels instead of running a traditional road race. The event generates funds for the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust and its Ending Homelessness Fund, which assists older adults transitioning out of homelessness by providing essential household items like pillows, sheets, and lightbulbs.
The race occurs on the Wolfson Campus’s Kyriakides Plaza, drawing students, professionals, homeless-service providers, seniors, sponsors, and spectators for an afternoon start. Teams vie for the fastest time, as well as for bed decoration and pre-event social media engagement, creating a lively atmosphere with costumes and team spirit. The cause is specific to Miami-Dade: over one-third of its unhoused population is over 55, and the race was established to highlight this issue publicly while raising practical support for seniors needing housing and necessities.
