Rondjes van Pijn is an annual running event in Pijnacker where the clock matters in an unusual way: every half hour, runners start another 4.2-kilometer lap. It is less about raw speed than staying in the game. Finish a lap in 25 minutes and you get five minutes before the next start; run faster and you earn more time to eat, drink, use the restroom, change layers, retie your shoes, or simply sit still for a moment.
The format makes the same short loop feel different as the day goes on. The light changes, different people end up beside you, and small things on the route, from sheep to insects, may appear on one lap and not another. IJsvereniging Pijnacker organizes the event, and it is built for both new runners and experienced ones. The name is honest: at some point it starts to hurt, and then the race becomes a simple choice between stopping and going out for one more lap.
