In early November, the strong Tramontane wind is a familiar presence in Roussillon, accompanying hundreds of hikers on the trails. The event takes place in Sorède, a Catalan village at the foot of the Albères massif in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of Occitanie. Autumn in Roussillon offers mild temperatures in the lowlands, but it can get cold above 1,000 meters, so a fleece is recommended. The wind often dictates the day's conditions. The 'Open' course is 17 km with 1,200 meters of elevation gain, offering little respite. The initial kilometers are flat, winding around Mas del Ca, before a steep descent onto more challenging switchbacks leading to the Néoulous Transmitter at 1,112 meters. From there, views extend to the Côte Vermeille and the Mediterranean Sea. For those who prefer to chat, the 'Fast Hiking Open' can be done in teams. The 'Fast Hiking Découverte' format is more accessible, covering 9.3 km with 643 meters of elevation gain, while still retaining a mountainous character. The 'Open Fast Hiking Sorède' rewards participants with bronze, silver, or gold badges based on their pace, rather than focusing solely on time. Organized by FFRandonnée, the event emphasizes total self-sufficiency, requiring participants to carry their own gear and map, with no aid stations along the route. Beginners and experienced hikers share the starting line in a friendly, non-competitive atmosphere. Free activities are available for children, and the organizers are committed to eco-responsible practices. Post-event, participants can enjoy Catalan cuisine, including Collioure anchovies, crème catalane, and rousquilles, with local vineyards like Banyuls nearby. Nearby attractions include the Priory of Santa Maria del Vilar, Argelès-sur-Mer, and Collioure, offering opportunities for relaxation and sightseeing. This event combines athletic effort with Catalan leisure. The challenge is not just completing the distance, but also being able to discuss it at the bar afterward.
