The Garmin WTF BUDA begins and ends at the Szépjuhászné railway station in Budapest, directing participants into the Buda Hills for an autumn Way to The Forest event. This event offers a hybrid format: trail runners can select from 7, 12, 21, or 32 km routes along hiking paths, while road runners have 10 or 18 km options on closed forest roads. The terrain's elevation gain is significant across all distances, with 270 m of climb on the 7 km trail course and 1,037 m on the 32 km trail XL.
The trail routes traverse the Buda Hills hiking network, reaching locations like Makkosmária, Sorrento, and Virág-völgy, depending on the chosen distance. The road courses utilize the traffic-free János-hegy road, allowing city runners to remain on pavement while still within a forest setting. The 32 km trail race presents a challenge, featuring a 5-hour time limit, a 4-hour cutoff at Makkosmária, and a recommendation to enter only if capable of maintaining a 9 min/km pace for 30 km. Participants, including city runners, novice trail runners, and seasoned hill runners, commence from the same starting point. The series, now in its sixth year, maintains a distinctive tradition where road and trail runners start concurrently and exchange high-fives at the finish line.
