About this race
The Wairarapa Cross Duathlon begins at The Downs on Ponatahi Road, near Carterton in New Zealand’s Wairarapa region. This off-road run/bike event offers morning starts for duathlon and mountain bike competitors, with run-only participants starting later. The short duathlon consists of a 2.5km run, a 9km mountain bike leg, and a final 2.5km run. The long duathlon follows the same run distances but extends the bike section to 23km. Additionally, individuals can opt for a 23km mountain bike race or select from 2.5km, 5km, and 14km run/walk options.
The course crosses the Wairarapa hill country near Ponatahi, providing vistas of the Wairarapa Valley, the Tararua Ranges, and, on clear days, Cook Strait towards the Kaikoura Ranges. The 14km run/walk mirrors the duathlon route, allowing non-cyclists to experience the longer off-road course. Organized by the Wairarapa Multisports Club, the event welcomes participants beyond club membership, including those interested in testing the course and offering feedback. Proceeds benefit the Carterton Indoor Pool Project, supporting Southern Wairarapa’s community indoor swimming facility. The entry fee includes a gourmet venison BBQ lunch.
