About this race
The Graveler is a 132km gravel bike race in New Zealand. It is suitable for gravel bikes, mountain bikes (hardtail recommended), or e-bikes (non-competitive section). The race starts near Hanmer Springs at the intersection of Tophouse, Clarence Valley, and Molesworth Roads. The route follows Molesworth Road to Molesworth Station, crossing the Waiau Toa/Clarence River and continuing up the Acheron River to the Severn Confluence. It then proceeds along the south side of the Alma River, bypassing Tarndale and heading to Sedgemere Lakes. From Sedgemere Lakes, riders will take Rainbow Road back to Hanmer via Rainbow and Tophouse Road, again following the Waiau Toa/Clarence River. The course passes St James Homestead before returning to the start and finishing at the Hanmer Springs Domain via Clarence Valley Road. Caution is advised for the fast downhill section on Clarence Valley Road from Jacks Pass to the finish. The course is 99.7% gravel, with 400m of paved road at the finish and 1,724m of elevation gain. A highlight is riding through Molesworth Station, which is typically only open to the public for a limited time each year. The route includes stream crossings and rough 4-wheel drive terrain, much of which is usually inaccessible. The Severn/Sedgemere Road section is also only open for a short period annually and is part of The Graveler. This race offers a unique opportunity to experience remote New Zealand backcountry and stunning landscapes.
