The EDP Porto Marathon is a full marathon held in northern Portugal, typically in November since 2004. The route connects Porto with the adjacent municipalities of Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia. Runners experience a flat, fast course that alternates between riverfront and coastal stretches. The marathon attracts international participants; the most recent edition reported over 10,000 athletes from 72 nations.
The course crosses Porto’s historic center, including the Ribeira district, and crosses the D. Luis Bridge. It also passes the well-known port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. The event covers a 15 km Family Race and a 6 km Mini Marathon, extending the weekend's activities to a broader audience. Combined, the races have attracted over 15,000 participants. Porto provides a distinctive setting for the marathon, with its UNESCO World Heritage old town, port wine heritage, and accessible urban design, offering a visually engaging run that avoids significant inclines.
