The Couch Potato begins at the Black Mountain Trailhead in Pisgah National Forest, covering 23.4 miles that pack a full Pisgah mountain-bike day. While the name is lighthearted, the race demands fitness, bike handling skills, and familiarity with Pisgah terrain. The route ascends approximately 3,785 feet and is limited to 200 participants by a US Forest Service regulation.
The course incorporates rough mining roads and traditional Pisgah singletrack close to the forest entrance, featuring aid stations at roughly miles 7 and 17. Racers can expect challenging climbs, swift descents, and sufficient technical sections to test both ability and endurance. Categories include juniors, open men and women, and various masters divisions, accommodating younger participants, seasoned locals, and those seeking a concise yet demanding Pisgah event. Post-ride, participants can enjoy food, beer, and a communal gathering.
